Assessing immune responses is an indispensable means of evaluating a vaccine’s efficacy during vaccine development. When encountered with a successful vaccine antigen, our immune system is stimulated and produces a complex array of protective mechanisms.
Following a vaccine challenge, changes in frequencies of different immune cell subsets can be determined by flow cytometric immunophenotyping. Functional assays are also used to measure specific immune functions that have been induced by an effective vaccine. The immune status of immune cells can be further evaluated using Intracellular Cytokine Staining, by identifying the specific cytokines and surface markers expressed. In addition to its versatility, flow cytometry enables high flexibility in its applications.
Flow cytometry is a powerful and important technique used in vaccine development, which permits better characterization and analysis of intricate immune responses. It is unique in its ability to measure an unprecedented number of parameters, facilitating simultaneous analysis of multiple immune cell subsets.
Laminar Wash™ technology can be easily incorporated into flow cytometry sample preparation during vaccine development. Automation of cell washing using Laminar Wash™ technology reduces the time needed for sample preparation, as well as increases reproducibility between assays. Gentle cell washing by Laminar Wash technology enhances cell viability and retention, which is especially beneficial when dealing with small starting cell counts or targeting rare immune cell populations. In addition to a higher quality of data, there is an improvement in biosafety as Laminar Wash technology lowers the risk for aerosolization of infectious samples.
